Bachelor of History
History
The establishment of the Department of History has been formulated since May 18, 1972 and is one of the oldest study programs at the Faculty of Humanities, Diponegoro Universitas Diponegoro. Based on the work of the Sub-consortium of Letters and Philosophy, which decided to open the Department of History, Universitas Diponegoro up to the Bachelor’s level. Lecture activities are carried out at the Hayam Wuruk Pleburan campus. In 1973, the Department of History only opened up to the baccalaureate level. The Department of History which later changed its name to the History Major, in 1977 organized a doctoral program. Initially, the History Department only had one study program, so the name of the History Department was synonymous with the History Study Program (PSS).
The History Study Program is held based on the Decree of the Director General of State Higher Education No. 106 / DIKTI / Kep / 1984 dated 21 August 1984. This study program is under the Department of History, Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Diponegoro and is located on Jl. Prof. Soedarto, SH, Campus UNDIP Tembalang Semarang. Based on the external evaluation of the Higher Education National Accreditation Board (BAN-PT), this Study Program has managed to get an A accreditation rating four times consecutively (2003, 2009, 2014, and 2019).
The Bachelor of History Study Program consistently develops expertise in maritime history and culture, as pioneered by the founding mother, namely Prof. Dr. A.M. Djuliati Soerojo in the 1990s. This study program wants to present the maritime face in the grand narrative of Indonesian history which was previously dominated by land aspects. It is undeniable, since the beginning, the sea has become a medium for exchanging ideas, even witnessing the process of integration of the Indonesian nation. However, at present, the existence of the maritime world continues to face challenges. Starting from that problem, the study program is committed to contributing to solving the nation’s problems, especially in the maritime field. Besides being supported by the basic scientific pattern of Diponegoro University, Undip’s very strategic position, namely on the north coast of Java, is also a good destiny in developing its expertise.
PROFILE
Based on the Vision, Mission, and Objectives which were then operationalized in the Development Strategic Plan, the study program is currently in Development Phase II, which is to become a superior study program in Southeast Asia. During the last five years, Bachelor of History has implemented a number of policies and strategic steps to support the competence of Human Resources (HR), including sending student delegations to various competitions and conferences, both nationally and internationally; as well as improving the competence of lecturers, in this case, through training, appreciation, and research funding assistance. With the support of highly qualified human resources, namely four professors, eight doctorates, and four masters, the study program is optimistic that it will be able to win the competition in the same study program at other universities, both at national and international levels, and be able to achieve the goals that have been plan.
The Bachelor of History Study Program has a goal, among others, to produce graduates in the fields of history and culture, especially maritime history and culture, who have moral integrity, scientific attitude, and are critical of the nation’s actual problems. Profiles of graduates of the study program are able to become skilled historians. The skill in question is being able to become a teacher, writer, researcher, journalist, and historical entrepreneur. Meanwhile, the profile of the students who come from various regions with various ethnicities and religions has become a strength for the study program developing an academic atmosphere based on multiculturalism. In addition to curriculum design and a supportive academic atmosphere, the better quality of students is also supported by the involvement of students in various relevant activities. This has shaped the character of students who are tough and creative as evidenced by the birth of study groups and entrepreneurs who are able to provide other skills needed in the world of work. One of the mainstay study groups is the Maritime Study Group (MSG) whose activities focus on discussions on maritime issues and community service in coastal areas.
CURRICULUM
Learning activities at PSS FIB UNDIP use the Student Centered Learning (SCL) method. Because students are required to always be active, SCL is one of the strategies for igniting students to always think critically and adaptively to the times. The currently implemented curriculum is the Competency-Based Curriculum 2017 and the Merdeka Learning Curriculum 2020. The curriculum consists of compulsory and elective courses by applying the Semester Credit System (SKS). The curriculum, which is implemented in parallel, is in accordance with the vision, mission, goals and objectives of the study program and accommodates the needs of stakeholders and the development of science. Both curricula are organized into a series of learning processes for eight semesters with a study load of 144 credits.
The Study Program has also designed several courses based on field practice, namely Field Study Practices (PKL) at historical sites from the Hindu-Buddhist, Islamic, and colonial times; PKL in coastal villages, and PKL in archiving institutions. PKL is believed to be able to improve the quality of graduates. PSS has several excellent courses to hone skills. Through the Historical Cinematography and Tourism Management courses, PSS graduates are able to engage in the creative industry.
With this curriculum, PSS graduates are expected to have predetermined competencies, so that they are able to compete and succeed in winning job opportunities in the fields of history and other relevant fields such as culture, education, journalism, and tourism. To respond to the times and the needs of society, PSS periodically carries out curriculum reviews and improvements based on input and feedback from graduate users and stakeholders. During this pandemic, learning was carried out by optimizing subscribed e-resources to support online lectures. E-resources in the form of books, scientific journal articles, newspapers, magazines, as well as a collection of theses, theses and dissertations that can be accessed using a Single Sign On (SSO) account.
IMPROVING STUDENT ACHIEVMENT
In order to increase student achievement in research competitions and writing scientific papers, intensive assistance and guidance is provided in the preparation of proposals and scientific papers. This of course will contribute to improve the quality and competence of graduates as well as contribute increasing the reputation of study programs, faculties, and university. These various efforts have brought students to brilliant achievements in national and international competitions. PSS FIB UNDIP students have attended various conferences at the international level, such as in Germany, the Philippines, Thailand, and Japan by presenting the results of research that has been carried out. Several research proposals by PSS students also received funding in the Student Creativity Program and successfully passed the National Scientific Week (PIMNAS).
SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES AND RESEARCH FUNDING
Students can access various scholarship opportunities that originate from both internal and external UNDIP, such as: Bidikmisi, Supersemar, Bank Indonesia, Djarum Foundation, and so on. Meanwhile, student research funding is obtained through lecturer research. Students are involved in research activities, such as collecting resources and writing, so that student research topics become part of the lecturer’s research that is funded.
PUBLICATION OF WORKS OF LECTURERS AND STUDENTS
Some students / graduates (together with their supervisors) have published part of their thesis in the form of books and articles in the national historiography journal. In addition, PSS also manages the publication of the Jurnal Citra Lekha (National Accredited Sinta 2). This positive activity must be increased so that more students / graduates publish their thesis.
In addition to these steps, students also get the opportunity to discuss with various sources, both from within and outside the country through the Visiting Professor program, Public Lecture, Workshop, Summer Course, and others. These activities are carried out to improve the students’ ability to communicate, as well as broaden their horizons and perspectives. Through these various efforts, PSS graduates are ready to win the competition in the job market in the fields of education, research, journalism, film, politics, government, and histo-preneurship (entrepreneurship in the field of history).
