BACKGROUND

As a result of a sub-consortium of Literature and Philosophy in 1972, members of the Board the Faculty of Literature and Culture, Diponegoro University, decided to establish the Department of History on May 18th, 1972. The department was established strongly based on the purpose of the faculty establishment, to educate candidates of scholars who are experts in the field of Indonesian cultural studies. The graduating scholars of the department are expected to be qualified in researching and expanding the knowledge of Indonesian culture and to introduce them to the international world.

In 1973, the Department of History only offered a diploma degree due to the lack of lecturer. The Department of History was then changed into the Major of History in 1977 when it commenced its master program. At first, the Major of History was interchangeable with the Study Program of History, while the Study Program of History itself was initiated based on the Executive Decision of Director General of Higher Education no: 111/DIKTI/Kep/2007 dated on August 31st 2007 based on the classification of the study program on each major and faculty of Diponegoro University. The Study Program of History itself was named under the Department of History of Diponegoro University, located at Prof. Soedarto, S.H Street, Tembalang, Semarang City. Since then, the Bachelor Degree Program of Indonesian History emerged in terms of its teachers’ qualification as well as its alumni quality.

The Study Program of Indonesian History is committed to keep up with the development of science and to fulfil the needs of stakeholders and career markets. Therefore, their curriculum has always been carefully reviewed and continuously developed. Referring to the result of the accreditation of BAN-PT No. 001/BAN-PT/Ak1/VIII/1998 dated August 11th 1998 regarding the ranking result of the accreditation of study programs for bachelor degrees, the Study Program of Indonesian History was accredited B. In 2003, the Study Program of Indonesian History was once again assessed by BAN-PT and accredited A as the result. In 2009, the accreditation was again undertaken by BAN-PT and, as a result, the Study Program of Indonesian History was accredited A according to BAN-PT’s Decision no. 035/BAN-PT/Ak-XI/S1/2009.
