Visiting Professor Dr. Thomas Lindblad: The History Department’s Commitment to International Publication

SEMARANG – Academic relations between the Department of History of Universitas Diponegoro and Leiden University have been going on for a long time. This relationship was initiated since the 1990s when designing the “Java Sea Program”, which involved four lecturers from the Department of History, namely Prof. Dr. Singg ih Tri Sulistiyono, M. Hum., Dr. Endang Susilowati, MA, Dr. Agus Supriyono, and Dr. Indriyanto under the coordinator Prof. Dr. AM Djuliati Suroyo.

On 23 August to 19 October 2018, a Visiting Professor Program under the theme “Indonesian Economic Maritime Studies: Publication Mentoring for Reputable International Journal”. This program was held in order to make the Program of World Class University (WCU) a success under the auspices of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation, Prof. Dr. Ir. Ambaryanto, M.Sc.

This Visiting Professor was held intensively for 3 weeks, with 3 main agendas: First, a public lecture was delivered by Dr. Thomas Lindblad entitled “Some Strategies for Writing Quality Articles for International Publications”. Second, presentations from participants on research topics in accordance with the theme of their thesis or dissertation. Third , individual consultation on the strategy for publishing articles in reputable international journals.

Professor Dr. Thomas is a senior lecturer in economic history at the Department of History at Leiden University. He stated that this program is very strategic to improve the quality of academic writing for lecturers and students, notably in compiling scientific articles in reputable journals.

Prof. Dr. Singgih Tri Sulistiyono, M.Hum, as Deputy Dean for Education and Student Affairs, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, in his opening remarks hopes that this program will be able to produce several articles written by lecturers and students that are ready to be published in reputable international journals.

Prof. Ambar stated that one of the indicators for achieving the national ranking is determined by the number of international publications. Over the years, the international publications of Universitas Diponegoto have increased rapidly, around 1000 more articles have been successfully published in reputable international journals. This is a big achievement for Undip.

According to Prof. Ambar, if we review the achievements of a few years ago, the number of publications only reached hundreds, around 130. Therefore, through a program that carries the theme of international journal writing training, publications at Undip will continue to increase.

During the Individual Consultation, more than 20 articles from lecturers and students were consulted. Sabahrudin Laode Mago, Magister Student of History, gave a good impression on the implementation of this program, “I took my research topic about changes in the mobility pattern of goods and people at Murhum Baubau Port, Southeast Sulawesi, 1967-2012. To be honest, I was very impressed with Mr. Thomas, especially in analyzing my research topic. He advised me to bring my research into a broader context so that I could engage in dialogue in international discourse. I can do this by adding to the Murhum Port network. “

Apart from Sabahrudin, Mujiburrahman, a graduate student, also said that this program has grown his critical power to see all problems. He also learned how to trace historical data, “I had individual consultations with Mr. Thomas Lindblad regarding my dissertation on Panglima Laot in Aceh. He explained about several references from journals, books, and more importantly from archives. Now, I have a clue to figure out the data about Panglima Laot in colonial times, specifically in Memorie van Overage ”.

On the same occasion, Professor Dr. Yety Rochwulaningsih, M. Si., As the head of the Magister Program of History, hoped that after consulting with Dr. Thomas Lindblad, the number of articles to be published in reputable international journals continues to grow, especially this year.”

Prof. Yety also revealed that this program is also part of our commitment to encourage and facilitate students to learn strategies in writing articles for reputable international journals.
