Department of History, Faculty of Cultural Studies (FIB), Diponegoro University (UNDIP) held a webinar entitled “Indonesian Culture in the Globalized World” on August 31, 2020. The webinar inviting Dr. Els Bogaerts, M. A. of Leiden University and Dr. Kathryn Anne Emerson, M. A. or familiarly called Kitsie Emerson from the Jakarta Intercultural School, was held in an online room via the zoom platform. The cultural theme was deliberately raised in order to provide knowledge and insight to all Indonesian people, especially the younger generation of Indonesian Culture which is also known globally.
This activity was opened by Dr. Nurhayati, M. Hum., as Dean of FIB, Diponegoro University. On that occasion, he advised all the younger generation not to be uprooted from Indonesian local wisdom in order to protect themselves from being damaged by the increasingly free flow of information. Don’t forget, Dr. Nurhayati, M. Hum., congratulated and thanked the Department of History for organizing the webinar. “The topic of this webinar is very relevant to the current condition of the nation which has launched the Industrial Revolution 4.0 or called the Digital Revolution. The Digital Revolution has certainly changed the mindset, way of life, way of communicating, especially among the millennial generation,” explained Dr. Nurhayati. He added that humans today are very friendly with technology. This situation, on the one hand, has made the flow of information easily accessible. On the other hand, information that is very free is also vulnerable to making the millennial generation fall into the trap. In such conditions, it is the obligation of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, which focuses on cultural and humanities issues, to maintain local culture.
In a webinar hosted by Dr. Dhanang Respati Puguh, M. Hum. that, Dr. Els Bogaerts delivered a material entitled “Indonesian Culture in The Globalized World”. Various cultural dynamics that have occurred since the end of the 19th century are described. In the end, Indonesian Culture was successfully presented in the global world through various means and media. One of the media exemplified is television. In line with the first speaker, Dr. Kitsie Emerson briefly describes her experiences and biography. He felt proud and did not expect that he, who was born in a small town in the United States, had fallen in love with the culture of a region he had never known, namely Indonesia. At first, Dr. Kitsie Emerson studied piano. While pursuing higher education, Dr. Kitsie Emerson got to know Javanese gamelan. His love for Javanese culture has brought him to fly to Java and live in Indonesia until now.
